Babies playing together!

One of my favorite things about having twins is when they play together!

Poor baby Jack!

Jack has been acting all crazy lately. Both boys were sick last week but Jack would eat *nothing.* Miss M was trying to feed him with a syringe! He was always crying if he wasn't being held, and something just wasn't *right.*

After an emergency trip last night to the pedi, we found out he has an ear infection. She was only able to see in one side because the other was so blocked with wax, but we think it is a double ear infection.

Poor baby Jack! We started the medicine last night and already he seems to be feeling better. He took his bottle like a champ today at Miss M's house!

11 months old

Sippy Cup!!!

Sumner finally got the hang of his sippy cup tonight! I took the valve out and put in 1/2 water and 1/2 apple juice. He GUZZLED it! He is such a big boy!

Jack is still chewing on his but I am hopeful...he ate half a fudge stripe cookie at the sitter's today! LOL!

Where have we been?!?!

Both the boys have been sososososososo sick! IN the meantime, our house has been so hard. Last week D took a day off to be home with them, and we both only got MAYBE 2 hours consecutively of sleep. It's hard when one is sick, but both at once is really difficult!

I had it (cold, HORRIBLE cough) the weekend prior (one weekend ago) as well as a stomach bug. Then they got it. Now David has it. (He never gets sick) He even had to take the day off work. (Second one ever in the last 6 years!

In the meantime, the boys turned 11 months old (look for pics coming soon!) and Summy got his first tooth. (We noticed it last Sat, it has *just* broken through!) Jack's working on tooth number 5! (his top incisor.) Jack is into *everything* now so we have up lots of gates...he's obsessed with our cat door to the garage and will try to go out of it, and stick his hands through it, etc etc. He army crawls and can do three crawling moves in a row before falling over.

Summy's beginning to bear a *tiny* bit of weight on his legs, and the therapists brought leg braces for him to wear for a few minutes at a time to practice weight bearing. Summy's head bump is about 1/2the size right now which is a huge relief...it seems to be going down.

Jack still loves to give kisses (only on the mouth) and he is currently going through a kick where he keeps trying to feed people and put things in and out of their mouths. Sumner's into "dancing" and every time he hears music practially he dances. Today he played the bottom of a toy like a drum so I could dance.

One week ago they both got their second dose of the Synagis vaccine. We expect to keep getting it through April. At the appointment, Sumner weighed 17 lbs, 6 oz and Jack weighed 15 lbs, 3 oz! Much better than we thought! My new goal is 18 for Sum at a year and 16 for Jack!

Their first birthday is fast approaching and we have decided on a "very hungry caterpillar" theme. Be on the lookout for invites!

Worry

The worry eats away at you when you are a preemie mom. It never goes away. I know moms worry, but I am sick with it.

Sumner's head hasn't gotten any better. God, please help me not to worry.

The boys aren't eating well at all now that they are back at the sitters. Especially Sumner. He's also back on a nursing strike. When I weighed him tonight, the scale read: 16.75. God, please help me not to worry.

Sumner isn't bearing weight on his legs still and the therapist worries b/c he lacks core strngth and isn't crossing the midline a lot. God, please help me not to worry.

I am so worried.

Our yellow, golf-ball-headed baby

We made an emergency trip to the pedi this evening after noicing a golf ball sized lump on Sum's head. While I was panicked, the pedi assured us it was fluid-filled and probably the cause of him probably bumping his head in the crib last night. (We never saw him bump his head in the last few days, which made the bump odder.) Althought I was worried, she assured me tumors are not that fast growing.

We also found out Sum has carotenemia. Wikipedia gives a great description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carotenoderma Summed up with these words:

Carotenoderma (also carotenodermia) is the name given to the yellow to yellow-orange discoloration of the skin that is caused by increased serum carotenoids (carotenemia) and their subsequent deposition in the outermost layer of skin[1]. Carotenoids are lipid-soluble compounds that include alpha- and beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. The primary serum carotenoids are beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein. Serum levels of carotenoids vary between region, ethnicity, and sex in the healthy population. All are absorbed by passive diffusion from the gastrointestinal tract and are then partially metabolized in the intestinal mucosa and liver to vitamin A. From there they are transported in the plasma into the peripheral tissues. Carotenoids are eliminated via sweat, sebum, urine, and gastrointestinal secretions. Carotenoids contribute to normal-appearing human skin color and are a significant component of physiologic ultraviolet photoprotection.

Carotenoderma visible on nasolabial foldsCarotenemia is a benign condition most commonly occurring in vegetarians and young children. Carotenemia is more easily appreciated in light-complexioned people, and it may present chiefly as yellowing of the palms and the soles in more darkly pigmented persons.[2]

Some foods containing carotenoids:

Good luck trying to rule all these out of Summy's diet!

Sending a prayer for Jack

A fellow mom and nestie friend who recently had triplets lost her son Jack today. If you have a moment, head to her blog http://www.multiplebaby.blogspot.com/ and post your condolences.

Then hug your loved ones a little tighter.

Reflections on 2007

I feel as if I would be remiss not to sit back and reflect a little on what the past year has dealt us. I remember New Year's 2007...the excitement of thinking about the birth of the boys and getting to meet them. Could I have ever imagined being blindsided like I was?

My top thing to be thankful for in 2008 is my life. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but I've been reading more and more on complete placental abruptions and I need to thank God I was in that hospital and we all survived.

As the boys' 1 year birthday approches, I find myself thinking and dwelling more and more on those scary days leading up to and including the birth of the tader tots. Books I have been reading warned that the first birthday can be a time of great anxiety and sadness, and they were right. My mind can't help but drift back to "what was going on one year ago today?"

Even looking through old pictures can be upsetting. D was awesome to take a ton of pictures after the birth, including one of me as they wheeled me through the NICU, half comatose, to see the babies. I remember blurry blobs, being so scared, and in so much pain. I didn't even know he was there.

It's hard to look forward. Sometimes when you have a preemie, it's hard to imagine what they *will* be. I wouldn't have guessed they'd be waving bye bye at the end of this year. Or feeding themselves puffs, or sitting. And as I look forward, I anxiously await what this year will hold: walking, first words, and many more exciting developments.

It's hard to look forward without first looking back.
